All About A/C Refrigerant Recharge Service

Recharging service is about installing additional refrigerant to the air conditioning system to restore its ability to cool hot air. This usually occurs due to a worn seal, connection, line, or compressor. This is why A/C recharge service also includes a thorough inspection of the air conditioning unit to find how the refrigerant escaped. If we find the culprit, we will repair the necessary parts in order to close the system before installing new refrigerant.

Why is Recharging Refrigerant Necessary?

The automotive air conditioning system relies on a liquid/gas refrigerant to cool hot air. The refrigerant is contained in a closed system under pressure by the compressor. If one of the components is compromised, it can allow refrigerant to escape at variable rates depending on the damage. When refrigerant escapes, the air conditioner will lose its cooling ability.

Why Do-it-Yourself Recharge Kits are a Terrible Idea

Despite the availability of recharge kits, A/C recharging is not a service that you want to attempt outside of a certified service department for several reasons:

What Happens if A/C Recharge Service is Neglected?

The air conditioning will not work properly. If a little refrigerant escapes, the air conditioner’s performance will decline. It may cool the air somewhat, but not at specifications. You might notice that the air is not as cool as before. If enough refrigerant escapes, the unit will blow out air at ambient temperatures, not cooled at all. Neglecting A/C recharge service when hot air blows out the vents is choosing not to have cool air when driving.
