Why is Serpentine Belt Maintenance Necessary?

The serpentine belt is also called the drive belt because it delivers power from the engine that accessories need to operate, including the water pump, alternator, power steering, and air conditioning compressor. Without a serpentine belt, major problems can occur such as the water pump not circulating coolant, causing the engine to overheat and the power steering pump not being powered, making it much more difficult to turn the steering wheel. Driving with a faulty serpentine belt risks catastrophic damage to the engine and can compromise your vehicle’s safety features.

What Happens When the Serpentine Belt Service is Neglected?

A serpentine belt will usually show signs of physical decline and will lose integrity before it breaks. If you notice any of the faulty serpentine belt symptoms, it is essential to have it inspected and replaced before it breaks while driving. Here are the important warning signs of needing to replace a serpentine belt:

  • Any physical problems, such as uneven wearing, rib separation, fraying, or excessive cracking.
  • Loud knocking, squealing, or slapping noises from under the hood toward the front of the engine.
  • Engine temperature increases up to the red line as the water pump is not working.
  • Power steering not working with it extremely difficult or impossible to rotate the wheel.
  • The battery system warning light comes on due to an ineffective alternator.

What is the Serpentine Belt Maintenance Interval?

This is different depending upon the model and year. On many GM vehicles such as the new Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the first inspection should occur at 200,000 km or ten years. Most older models do not have such an extended inspection interval, and it’s closer to 80,000 km. If you bring your vehicle to us for service at Viking Motors, we will inspect the drive belt as a part of every multi-point inspection. Given the importance of a good serpentine belt, it is a good idea to inspect it routinely, especially for hard-working trucks facing severe operating conditions.
